COMMENTS ON PROFESSOR CUMMINGS'S PAPER.

This article comments on Professor I.I. Cummings' paper which offers a vision of what organizational behavior (OB) research will be in the 1980s. There was an increase in sophistication in data collection and analysis in OB; There is a need to recognize that the "relevance" of the work is not inherent in the procedures used or the findings that ensue from them. If enduring, meaningful relevance to a variety of contexts is sought, constructs are needed that lend themselves to operations of inquiry. Constructs should be used that go beyond the convenient, here-and-now operations in use.
