Abstract

In the doubly magic nucleus <superscript>208</superscript>Pb , five states are observed at 5648, 5658, 5686, 5694, 5836keV by <superscript>208</superscript>Pb ( p, p′) via isobaric analog resonances in <superscript>209</superscript>Bi . The 5686, 5694, 5836 states with spins 6<superscript>-</superscript>, 7<superscript>-</superscript>, 8<superscript>-</superscript> are shown to contain almost the full strength of the particle-hole configuration g<subscript>9/2</subscript> f<subscript>7/2</subscript> . The 5658 5<superscript>-</superscript> state contains a major g<subscript>9/2</subscript> f<subscript>7/2</subscript> fragment with admixtures of d<subscript>5/2</subscript> f<subscript>5/2</subscript> , d<subscript>5/2</subscript> f<subscript>7/2</subscript> . The 5648, 5649keV states observed in a quintuplet at E<subscript>x</subscript> = 5.63 - 5.65 MeV are preliminarily identified to have spins (4)<superscript>-</superscript> and 6<superscript>+</superscript> to 9<superscript>+</superscript>. The 5648keV (4)<superscript>-</superscript> state contains almost half of the g<subscript>9/2</subscript> f<subscript>7/2</subscript> strength and half of the h<subscript>9/2</subscript> d<subscript>5/2</subscript> strength with admixtures of d<subscript>5/2</subscript> f<subscript>5/2</subscript> , d<subscript>5/2</subscript> p<subscript>3/2</subscript> , d<subscript>5/2</subscript> f<subscript>7/2</subscript> .
