Abstract
- The article presents a discussion of the 1969 sociological work "Black Awakening in Capitalist America," by Robert L. Allen, outlining its intellectual history and influence. Details are first given overviewing the book's' major thesis of internal colonialism theory. Comments are provided situating the book's socio-political assertions within the older tradition African American intellectual ideology since the early to mid-19th century. Discussion of the book's reception and continuing influence into the 21st century is then addressed.
