Abstract

The article discusses how aragonite is being mined by the Dillingham Corp. of Hawaii from the Great Bahama Bank in 1970, from which a new island is emerging from the sea called Ocean Cay. It says that among the islands, islets and cays in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay is considered the least lovely because it is a flat and rough rectangular island that resembles a barren swatch of the Sahara. The mining has resulted in the presence of long bars, broad drifts and curving barchans of pure aragonite along the edges of the bank.
