Abstract
- The article profiles jockey William "Bill" Shoemaker who broke the record of Johnny Longden when he earned his 6,033rd victory in September 1970. Shoemaker broke the record when he competed at the California track Del Mar atop a little-known horse named Derby Day Boy. Among Shoemaker's nearest active competitors are Bill Hartack and Walter Blum. When asked if Shoemaker was excited about his win, Del Mar Vice President (VP) Clement Hirsch says the jockey does not get excited, he does not get mad, he just wins races.
