Abstract: This section offers news briefs related to sports in the U.S. as of January 1972. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has decided to permit member schools to let freshmen participate in intercollegiate competitions. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is facing a challenge concerning the number of basketball teams competing in the Eastern Conference. The New York Court of Appeals upheld a case filed by lady umpire Bernice Gera against minor-league baseball on account of discrimination.
