Oakland Athletics owner Charlie Finley refused to release team manager Dick Williams despite his resignation to sign a contract with the New York Yankees unless he receives some kind of compensation. Oklahoma will remain the champion at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) bowl games in spite of its probation status due to recruiting violations. A salary list of Seattle's SuperSonics players showed evidence that, as a group, professional basketball players are the best-paid athletes.
