Abstract

The article offers information related to the parochial schools in the U.S. It comments that the government subsidies to parochial schools are unconstitutional because of the First Amendment ban on any law respecting an establishment of religion. It highlights the commitment of U.S. President Richard Nixon to find some constitutionally acceptable means of providing parochial school aid while 16 different states have devised their own systems for circumventing the ban. According to government attorney Lewis F Powell Jr., the consequence of all the plans for the parochial schools was a special economic benefit designed to preserve and support religion-oriented institutions.
