Abstract

The article focuses on the views of novelist John Updike on the existence of the devil which is considered by many as the opponent of God. Updike was the author of the anthology "Soundings in Satanism," and a Lutheran who became a Congregationalist. According to Updike, the devil grew from the exigencies and paradoxes of the human condition and that pain, plague, and destruction which were everywhere were a manifestation of evildoing. He believed that the devil enriched the rich man with ruin and considered the devil as a metaphysical possibility and a necessity.
