Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to assess the validity of the Self-Esteem Inventory among Oglala Sioux adolescents. The traditional Sioux value system is based upon bravery, generosity, and individual autonomy, values which have not been changed substantially through acculturation. It may be that the criteria of success among the Sioux, and therefore of self-esteem, differ from those of white Americans. The difference in value systems may nullify the validity of the Self-Esteem Inventory for the Sioux. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
