Abstract

This article reviews the pathology of Orthopoxvirus infection in humans and animal models. Smallpox is a human disease caused by Variola virus, a species of Orthopoxvirus. Orthopoxviruses are double-stranded DNA viruses that replicate in the cytoplasm of cells and have a high degree of antigenic similarity. Monkeypox virus has been studied in rhesus and cynomolgus macaque as well as in several rodent species.
