Abstract

The article describes a study which investigated the use of a perlite biofilter to treat air contaminated with α-pinene. To make the particle surface more hydrophobic, the perlite was coated partially with silicone oil. In comparison to the filter with uncoated perlite, the silicone oil-coated perlite biofilter performed better in removing the air contaminant at 2.5 L/min airflow rate. However, the removal efficiency was almost the same at 1.5 L/min airflow rate. It has been shown that the mass transport of the α-pinene contaminant from gas to liquid is improved by the silicone oil.
