Abstract: The article discusses the use of tariffs by the U.S. to protect U.S. industry and derive income from imported goods. A timeline of U.S. tariff history is presented that highlights policy decisions and the people behind them including U.S. Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. Trade and tariff negotiations between U.S. President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao are noted.
