Abstract

The article presents suggestions from schools that won the Education Trust's Dispelling the Myth award about ways to decrease the achievement gap in U.S. schools among minority and low-income students. School principal Elain Thompson talks about academic success belonging to the entire school, not only to students, teachers, and administrators. Former principal Molly Bensinger-Lacy comments on teacher expectations as her key to success. Other suggestions include the importance of performing inspections so principals can directly oversee their schools, educational accountability, tenacity, providing support to teachers, and using measurements of student achievement effectively.
