Abstract

The article focuses on the opposition of barge line operators in Mississippi to the subsidy bill in 1937. Among the initiatives aimed at reviving the old state are a floating hotel proposed by Reconstruction Finance Corp. and a fleet of fast, self-propelled barges for overnight passenger service between Saint Louis, Missouri and New Orleans, Louisiana. The bill requires the United States Maritime Commission to insure mortgages on floating property. Operators do not want the subsidy because they say it promotes competition.
