Abstract

The article reports a drop in demand for paper which prompted many U.S. plants to implement selective machine downtime to reduce their production rates. The trend has made the paper and paperboard markets join the lumber market in the list of industries suffering from the recession. Industry operating ratios also dropped to 94 percent to 90 percent, a level where price cutting usually starts.
