Abstract

The article discusses the situation in the paper industry. It indicates that although the demand for paper and paperboard is rising and the prices are up, papermakers see themselves squeezed by fast-rising raw material and fuel costs and the threat of government actions that can roll back price increases. It notes that production in most mills such as Crown Zellerbach Corp., International Paper Co. and St. Regis Paper Co. was edging up to 100% and prices up by 15% over last year. It points out that the industry has no intention of adding to its capacity.
