Abstract

The article presents the disagreement between wealthy railroads and weaker rails on the railroad merger proposal of the Interstate Commerce Commission in the U.S. in 1961. According to presidents of the healthy railroads, the public interest lies in reducing the industry to a more effective size for the improvement of service. Lenders, workers, managements and owners destined to be eliminated in the cutting process are sure that public interest lies elsewhere.
