LE PRÉFIXE RE- EN ROUMAIN ET EN FRANÇAIS À PARTIR DU DICTIONNAIRE BILINGUE D'ALEXANDRE VAILLANT.

A prefix of Romance origin, important in the inventory of derivatives of these languages, particularly French, re- still presents interest from an etymological point of view, but also from the perspective of its productivity and its relations with the other Romance or non-Romance derivatives. The prefix has had a special evolution in Romanian, where, on the one hand, it is inherited from Latin and has been preserved in a series of derivates3, and, on the other, it is borrowed from French and Italian; the inherited prefix, as opposed to that of Romance descent, comes to have the same form with a Slavic prefix, i.e. ră-. In the stages preceding the loan of Romance terms, the Latin re-, transformed in Romanian into ră-, seems to have been replaced by the Slavic prefix with the same form. The numerous entries, which a bilingual dictionary from the first half of the nineteenth century assigns to it, show the clear preference of the Romance derivative over its Slavic homonym. The article aims to compare and contrast the competition between the forms re- and ră- as they are illustrated by the bilingual dictionary, a work published in a century when the prefix re- seems to have had a significant role in the derivational practices in Romanian.
