Abstract

Chapter four of the book "Value Inquiry Book Series: Pragmatism, Education, and Children: International Philosophical Perspectives" is presented. It offers a reexamination of the potential of the pragmatism of philosopher John Dewey and his philosophy of growth, in consideration of the so-called Emersonian moral perfectionism. It says pragmatism, Dewey's pragmatism in particular, is widely known for its optimism and inadequate recognition of the tragic. It cites the attempt of philosopher Richard Rorty to conduct a reconstruction of this pragmatism.
