Abstract

The article examines the relations that have developed between Russia and Canada due to their mutual interest in the Arctic. The richness of natural resources within the Arctic regions has become a source of much geopolitical competition, but Canada and Russia are the forerunners. Each country claims diplomatic ownership of large swaths of the territory and its resources. The author attests that Russia’s national security is largely predicated upon securing oil and gas resources, while Canada views Russian attempts to obtain resources from the Arctic as a threat to its own national security. The language used by each country to describe the other is compared.
