Abstract

The article analyzes the factors that contributed to Barry Goldwater's debacle in the 1964 U.S. presidential election and how they would all figure out in the problems of Ronald Reagan's possible candidacy in 1976. The factors behind Goldwater's rout include situation, image, conduct, staff, party and opposition. Except for the political situations, the Reagan campaign is expected to deal with the same five factors particularly the task of projecting an image of moderate conservatism.
