Abstract

The article reports on research by evolutionary biologist Randy Thornhill into the effects which endemic levels of disease may have on the development of democracy. The parasite-stress model, which Thornhill developed with his colleague Corey Fincher at the University of New Mexico, is described. Evidence that disease prevalence and democracy are inversely correlated is presented.
