Abstract
- Using New Theories of state-society relations under Communism, this article focuses on changes made to Nowa Huta's street and settlement names in 1957 as a result of de-Stalinization, and on opinions expressed by town residents in anticipation of these changes in a public opinion survey. These events may be viewed as a dialogue between rulers and ruled, in which toponymy serves as a symbolic medium for the projection of conflicting visions of Poland's past and future.
