Abstract

Discusses four mistakes that prevented the U.S. from possibly thwarting the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, after revelations that President George W. Bush had been briefed in August 2001 by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) that al-Qaeda, headed by Osama bin Laden, might hijack airliners. Memo sent by U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent Kenneth Williams that noted a pattern of Arab men signing up at flight schools; Detention of Zacarias Moussaoui, who was suspected of terrorist activity, in August 2001. INSET: WHAT THEY KNEW AND WHEN THEY DID.
