Abstract

The article focuses on the growing isolation and sense of disconnect of U.S. military personnel from the rest of the United States in the 21st century. It states that due to the closure of military bases across the country, there is decreased contact between military personnel and civilian Americans. It mentions that only 15 percent of Americans between 17 and 24 years of age are eligible to join the armed forces. Army veteran Matt Gallagher comments that a lot of military personnel feel they are a part of a warrior caste which is separate and distinct from American society. The article talks about how military recruitment has predominantly moved to Southern, Mountain West, and rural regions nationwide.
