Abstract

This paper is a critical reflection on some issues in the paper of Remco Havermans 'Mindfulness meditation in mental health care: too much, too often and too early' and his reaction to the papers of Nyklíček (2011) and Schroevers et al. (2011) who gave a comment. I conclude that there is every reason to consider the research on mindfulnesstraining as an example of an ordinary process of accumulating empirical evidence of an increasing methodological quality. I explain mindfulness as a very obvious way to improve mental health, although this does not prove anything in case of severe psychopathology. I would like to stress the notion of amoral-ethical aspect, not to confuse with metafysica or mysticism, illustrated by winners of the Nobel Peace prize. Concerning psychological research in general I would like to point out the difficulty of doing research on phenomena of an existential nature and the impossibility of a comprehensive definition. I disagree with the author in respect to his ideology that psychological research should precede clinical practice. I give several arguments against his view. Inmy opinion, only a dynamic and creative tension and interaction between research and clinical practice enhances progress. Mindfulness can serve as a guide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
