Abstract

The impact of tanks and mechanization on military thought and images of war during the 1920s is generally acknowledged. This article examines the context, both before the Great War and after, of German imagery of battle, and argues that this tended to privilege the moral dimensions of military conduct and behaviour even as commentators grappled with the implications of 'machine age' warfare.
