Abstract

The article attempts to comprehend the mortality of the boot and shoe manufacturing industry by compiling data, analyzing its significance, determining the general causes of the decline, and offering suggestions for industry control. The data shows that the loss of shoe manufacturers in most towns can be attributed to migration westward and the difficulty of large-scale production. Additionally, many of the current manufacturers rent equipment, the cost of which leaves little room for reinvestment or expansion. The author raises the question of social control over the renting of equipment, presently dominated by the United Shoe Machinery Company.
