Abstract

The article offers poetry criticism of the poetic sequence "The Maximus Poems," by Charles Olson, focusing on the figure of Massachusetts Bay Colony Governor John Winthrop. It comments on history and myth in the sequence. The author reflects on Puritans and several figures in colonial Massachusetts history, including Reverend John White. Olson's treatment of the history of Gloucester, Massachusetts is considered.
