Abstract

The article profiles Admiral William McRaven, the commander of the U.S. Navy SEALs special-operations team that assassinated terrorist leader Osama bin Laden. Topics discussed include his leadership of the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) U.S. military strike force, the decline of U.S. commando units following the 1980 failure of the Desert One hostage-rescue mission in Iran, and his dismissal from command of the Naval Special Warfare Development Group in 1982 by Commander Richard Marcinko, with whose leadership style McRaven disagreed. Also mentioned is a 2001 parachute accident that nearly killed him.
