Abstract

A new composition of phosphor material AlON:Er<superscript>3+</superscript> codoped with Mg<superscript>2+</superscript> were prepared by solid-state reaction method. The effect of Mg<superscript>2+</superscript> dopants on upconversion luminescence properties of the AlON:Er<superscript>3+</superscript> phosphor was investigated. At certain concentrations, Mg<superscript>2+</superscript> dopants were found to greatly enhance the red emission intensity of AlON:Er<superscript>3+</superscript> phosphors. From our results, the enhancement of the emission intensity by Mg<superscript>2+</superscript> dopants was discussed in terms of the Er<superscript>3+</superscript> distribution in crystal lattice and crystal symmetry by introducing oxygen vacancy.
