Abstract
- A case history of an extradural haematoma of the posterior cerebral fossa is presented. The most important findings were rapidly developing papilloedema, an ipsilateral hemiplegia, and the angiographic evidence of a pronounced hydrocephalus. Operation resulted in a cure. Based on the cases in the literature and on this individual observation, the authors refer to the importance of recognizing an occipital fracture as well as to the diagnostic possibilities of angiography. They stress the necessity for bilateral burr-holes in the posterior fossa when, for other reasons, an angiogram cannot be performed, but an occipital fracture has been recognized and the clinical situation is deteriorating. The possibility of the simultaneous development of multiple haematomas (21% of the cases in the literature) must be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
