Abstract

Reports that Calvin F. Quate of Stanford University and Victor Jipson of the Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering Department have developed an acoustic microscope that can see into a material as clearly as an optical microscope examines its surface. Solution for the inability of sound and light to form images of objects smaller than their own wavelengths; Significance of immediate subsurface region.
