Abstract

The author explores the historical source material that provided historian Sir Geoffrey Elton with his thesis regarding the modernization of the Tudor government during the monarchy of British King Henry VIII under the aegis of English statesman Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Essex, based on his account in the 1953 book "The Tudor Revolution in Government" as well as his later writings. An overview of Elton's academic training and scholarship is provided which includes his relationships with contemporary historians including J. E. Neale of University College London, director of the Institute of Historical Research V. H. Galbraith, and Tudor-period historian Florence M. G. Evans.
