Abstract

The article presents the views of Jared Whitaker from the University of Georgia department of crop and soil sciences when he spoke at the Beltwide Cotton Conferences about the potential benefits of subsurface drip irrigation (SSDI) for cotton production in southeastern U.S. He notes the significant increase of irrigation in Georgia since the 1970s and cites the efficiency of SSDI. He also discusses dryland production, overhead irrigation systems, and the possible disadvantages of SSDI.
