Abstract

The prismatic and nacreous layers in the shells of Barbatia obliquata, Modiolus metcalfei, Pinna vexillum and Mytilopsis sallei vary in thickness, though they show similar affinity for both basic and acidic dyes. Histochemical evidence revealed that these layers contain proteins as well as acid mucopolysaccharides. Quinone-tanning is observed in the nacreous layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
