Abstract

A criticism is presented of the poetic epigram known as the Nautilus Epigram written by Hellenistic Greek poet Callimachus, focusing on Callimachus' use of Homeric formulations. The author discusses Callimachus' use of borrowed words from Homer's archaic poetry, particularly his use of particles and conjunctions frequently found in Homer in association with commanding phrases or imperatives, and the use of the phrase ἀλλὰ σὺ μὲν νῦν in the poem "Argonautica," by Apollonius of Rhodes.
