Abstract
- The article discusses William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, known as Lord William Bentinck, focusing on his time as British Commander-in-Chief in the Mediterranean and British Minister to the Court of Sicily, Italy. It comments on Sicilian separatism, Italian nationalism, and Bentinck's efforts to encourage Italian resistance to France from 1811 to 1814. The author also reflects on Sicily's adoption of a constitution on the British model, Bentinck's attitude to the Papacy, and his relations with Sicilian rulers King Ferdinand IV of Naples and III of Sicily and Queen Maria Carolina.
