Abstract

The article focuses on the history of municipal management in the suburbs of London, England from the seventeenth century to 1848 when the Metropolitan Board of Works was created. Vestries of Medieval parishes including Westminster, St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, and St. Pancras were charged with overseeing services including collection of local taxes, the laying and maintenance of roads, police services, and services for the parish poor. Other topics considered include issues with municipal water supplies, fire-fighting services, and street lighting.
