Abstract

The article profiles athlete and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar who is considered a hero and deified by his fans and the media in India. The global popularity of cricket, the passion for the sport in India, and Tendulkar's influence on the next generation of players are discussed. Highlights of Tendulkar's successful career and personal life are discussed in the context of factors resulting from India's economic liberalization which set Tendulkar up to be a marketer's perfect pitchman or celebrity endorser for a product. India's performance in World Cup cricket tournaments is also discussed.
