Abstract

The article discusses the theatrical references used by Roman rhetorician Marcus Fabius Quintilianus to explain his theories of public speech in the "Institutio Oratoria." Quintilian points out that delivery has a powerful effect in oratory and illustrates his concepts of delivery with theatre-oriented examples. He believes that all physical action of the body and face can be considered gesture and should be guided by the idea of speech.
