Abstract

The article assesses mathematics practices in the U.S. as of September 2011. It notes that the culture of teaching in the country emphasizes on two summative assessments which include requiring teachers to assign grades to students and requiring the students to take examinations as ordered by the No Child Left Behind legislation. The potential negative effects of grades on the benefits that can be found with formative assessment are discussed.
