Effects of Lotus Root (the Edible Rhizome of Nelumbo nucifera) on the Deveolopment of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Obese Diabetic db/db Mice.

The article discusses a study which examines the effect of edible rhizome of Nelumbo nucifera on the protection against hepatic injury from non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in obese diabetic mice. The presence of polyphenolic compounds proanthocyanidins in lotus roots along with its health promoting properties is also described. The suppression of lipogenic enzyme, inflammatory genes and elevation of adiponectin serum level which has protective effect against NAFLD is reported.
