Abstract

The article discusses the cyclists' rights movement in Montreal, Quebec, during the late 19th century. According to the article, the movement attempted to capitalize on the growing popularity of cycling in order to change the legal and environmental contexts of Montreal. It compares the Montreal cyclists' movement to those of other North American cities. The author argues that cycling created new perceptions of urban and rural environments in the 19th century and that cyclists became aware of the legal restrictions placed upon their bicycling activities.
