Abstract

Using the Civil Disobedience Movement in India from 1930-1932, the article explores how British Imperialism and colonial violence were depicted in the British press and how such reports shaped the public opinion of Great Britain regarding its colonial administration. It considers local accounts written by witnesses of the British Raj's violence against peaceful Indian demonstrators, the writings of investigative journalists covering the events, and compares such information with published press accounts in Great Britain. Other topics include the Indian National Congress, political accountability, and British journalist H. N. Brailsford.
