Abstract

The article focuses on the role of refrigeration in the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River in Washington. The structure was constructed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and a consortium from 1933 to 1942 to produce hydroelectric power and to provide irrigation. It has been reported that the subsidence of spoil banks near the river disrupted the construction process. Refrigeration was reportedly used to shore up the earth and rock and prevent landslides.
