Abstract

The article discusses strategies for librarians to target their children's library services and reading programs toward preteens in the U.S. The author, head of youth services at a public library in Wisconsin, discusses several activity programs she conducts for her library's preteen users such as arts and crafts workshops, a Hawaiian theme party called an American Girl party after the doll named Kanani and the characters of the related book series, as well as an environmentally themed art program called Alien Art. Topics include the use of the book "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" for a reading group, and a the author's organization of a Greece-themed 3-hour event in 2011 that featured the film "The Lightning Thief."
