Abstract

The article critiques the poetry of nineteenth century American poet Emily Dickinson, focusing on poems portraying bridges. It comments on bridges near Dickinson in the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts, including several Sunderland bridges. The author analyzes the use of bridges in the poems to reflect Christian concepts such as faith and salvation. Poems analyzed include "Faith – is the Pierless Bridge," known as F978, as well as the poem known as poem F1459.
