Abstract

Clearance mechanisms remove inhaled deposited particles from the lungs, by mucociliary transport in conducting airways and to a large extent by alveolar macrophages in the respiratory region. This paper describes the effects of acute exposures to sulphuric acid (H2SO4), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), or ozone (O3) on particle clearance in rabbits. Cells recovered by bronchopulmonary lavage from animals exposed in vivo were also examined. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
